The name Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu (BOS) is a name every Lagosian and indeed every Nigerian has become familiar with. It is a name that signifies boldness, excellent leadership skills, and a quest to deliver on the people’s mandate.

Born on 25 June, 1968, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu  is a Nigerian politician and the current Governor of Lagos.

He became governor under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) after contesting and unexpectedly winning the gubernatorial primaries under in October 2019.

Before his gubernatorial ambition, he was the managing director and CEO of Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSPDC)
A product of resounding victory, His Excellency, Mr. Sanwo-Olu polled 75.6% of the total valid votes cast in the election to substantiate his legitimacy, which was further affairmed by a 72.12% vote difference between him and the next contestant.

His victory at the election is a solid endorsement of his leadership aptitude and the All Progressives Congress (APC) politics of development and inclusiveness in Lagos State.

As an inspirational leader, with a track-record of performance, his candidacy was welcomed by Lagosians as a continuation of ongoing development in Lagos State.

Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is happily married to Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, a Medical Doctor, who is a foremost advocate for social welfare and rights as well as a respected physician, administrator and philanthropist  Their union is blessed with children.

Career and Life

Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was the treasurer at former Lead Merchant Bank from 1994 to 1997 after which he moved to the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as the head of foreign money market. He then proceeded to First Inland Bank, Plc (now First City Monument Bank) as a deputy general manager and divisional head. He was the chairman of Baywatch Group Limited and First Class Group Limited.

PUBLIC SERVICE

Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu began his political career in 2003, when he was appointed a Special Adviser on Corporate Matters to the then deputy governor of Lagos State, Otunba Femi Pedro. He was later made the acting Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget until 2007, when he was appointed as the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry by then Governor,  Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

After the General Elections of 2007, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was appointed Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions by Governor Babatunde Fashola.  Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was made Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in 2016.

Some of his notable public sector achievements include the supervision of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) privatization projects.

He set up and was the Pioneer Board Chairman of Lagos Security Trust Fund. The LAGBUS System and the Control & Command Centre in Alausa, were subsequently established under his directives.

POLITICS

On 16 September 2018, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu formally declared his intention to run for the office of the governor of Lagos State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His declaration attracted endorsements from major stakeholders in Lagos State politics; including the Governor’s Advisory Council of the Lagos chapter of the APC and members of the Lagos State House of Assembly. He won the Lagos gubernatorial primaries of the APC (APC) on October 2, 2018.

At the APC flag-off campaign rally held on 8 January 2019, Governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode, and 63 political parties lent their support for the candidacy of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu. In a landslide victory over his opponent, Jimi Agbaje, Sanwo-Olu was elected to the Office of Governor of Lagos State at the 2019 General elections for Lagos State which held on 9 March 2019. He was sworn in as the 15th Governor of Lagos State at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Lagos Island, on Wednesday May 29, 2019.

Since his swearing-in, Governor Sanwo-Olu has worked assiduously to develop on the people’s mandate. Despite the Cod-19 Pandemic he has completed numerous projects under the THEMES, Greater Lagos Agends is roads construction across major areas in Lagos state.

The Governor commissioned the Oshodi – Abule-Egba BRT Lane amongst other projects in 2020 and has since commissioned numerous infrastructure and social transformation and empowerment projects across the five divisions of Lagos State.

INDUSTRY AND DEVELOPMENT

His Excellency, Mr. Sanwo-Olu is also an alumnus prestigeous of the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School of Government, London Business School and the Lagos Business School. In addition, he is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Directors (IOD), Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), and Fellow of Nigeria Institute of Training and Development (NITAD).

In 2003, his eventful career opened to yet another colourful chapter with his appointment, first as Special Adviser to the Deputy Governor on Corporate Matters; and later as Special Adviser to the Executive Governor on Corporate Matters in 2004.

His Excellency, Mr. Sanwo-Olu’s entry became a reference point for professionalism and excellence in the public service. At 39, he was appointed acting Commissioner for Economic Planning & Budget from 2004 to 2005, and became the substantive Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in 2007 following his exceptional performance.

His managerial imprint became noticeable at the Lagos State Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions in 2007 when he served as the Commissioner. During this period, Mr. Sanwo-Olu authored an executable Civil Service Framework designed around the Human Capital Performance Index, which puts Lagos State civil servants amongst the highest and regularly paid in the country.

A public officer with an impressive record of accomplishments, he was instrumental to the setting-up of Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), a contributory pension scheme, even ahead of the Federal Government of Nigeria. Some of his notable contributions include setting-up and serving as the pioneer Chairman the Lagos State Security Trust Fund Board, tracking and intelligent analysis of Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) by the various government agencies and parastatals, including the Board of Internal Revenue (BIR), for executive consideration and policymaking; as well as preparation and publication of the Lagos State Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (LASEEDS). It is also to Sanwo-Olu’s credit that the Lagos Asset Management Limited (LAGBUS) was established to ease the public transportation problem by complementing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Lagos State.

He also worked on the Control & Command Centre in Alausa, which significantly improved the capacity of the security agencies to respond to distress calls in a swift and timely manner. His Excellency, Mr. Sanwo-Olu was appointed the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSPDC) in 2016, and in just 2 years, the visionary administrator had returned the hitherto struggling organisation to the path of efficiency and profitability.

He also refocused the organisation to effectively tackle housing deficit in the state, which again validated his credentials as a resourceful leader and problem solver. His valuable experience garnered from executive-level roles in the private and public sectors has not only distinguished him, but also made him a valuable resource to some notable organisations on whose boards he has served.

It is unexpected that Babajide’s enterprising career in the private sector, defining roles in public service and selfless contributions to the society would not have attracted international recognitions and accolades at home. But as a man attired in modesty, these awards and laurels are encouragements that keep him on the path of service to God and humanity. A devout Christian and family-focused man whose marriage to Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu is blessed with lovely children, Mr. Sanwo-Olu, in addition to his love for public speaking, is a member of numerous prestigious clubs, which include Ikoyi Club 1938, the Island Club, Yoruba Tennis Club and the Clear Essence Health Club.
